Lil’ Brown Girl Presents: Who Am I?

I am black– unfortunately.

I am black– unfortunately.

I am black and it is unfortunate because I am so much more than a melanin painted applique.

I am black and it is unfortunate because the world has bound me in a binary relationship with beauty.

I am black and it is unfortunate because my blackness precedes me– rarely allowing me to make my own introduction

I am black and it is unfortunate because my blackness speaks volumes and sometimes I would rather stay quiet.

I am black and it is unfortunate because if I wasn’t holding my blackness at arm length- like a flag… or a shield- my hands would be free to carry more relevant causes.

I am black and it is unfortunate because in an alternate, preferable universe the color of my skin would be a non-factor, a casual detail on my driver license next to brown eyes and five foot four inches.

But since I am black and since blackness does matter, I will bathe myself in it every morning and polish off the rust every night.

I will massage my blackness’ shoulders and I will never let it lose a fight.

Because as long as my blackness is a problem, my blackness will shine bright.

Absurdly well written. Breath taking, actually.
